Silver In 401k: How To Hold Physical Silver For Retirement In 2026

If you want to own physical silver in 401k savings, you can roll your funds into a self-directed Silver IRA. Use a direct rollover, and you’ll keep your retirement account status and avoid penalties.

Here we cover how the rollover works, which silver coins and bars qualify and how much a Silver IRA costs each year.

Key takeaways

  • A self-directed Silver IRA holds physical silver coins and bars.
  • When your plan sends the money straight to your IRA custodian, you’ll owe no tax and no penalty.
  • Coins and bars must be 99.9% pure, like the American Silver Eagle and the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf.
  • A Silver IRA costs about $200 to $350 a year in custodian and storage fees.

Can you hold silver in a 401(k)?

401(k) plans offer a set menu of mutual funds and index funds chosen by your employer, so you can’t buy coins or bars inside the plan. You can still get some exposure to silver there if your plan offers a precious metals fund or lets you buy mining stocks through a brokerage window.

Some employers may offer a self-directed 401(k), and if you’re self-employed, you can open a self-directed solo 401(k). Both can hold physical bullion.

A Department of Labor rule proposed in March 2026 would make it easier to add funds holding commodities to 401(k) menus. It hasn’t passed yet. The rule only covers funds offered on 401(k) menus, so it wouldn’t let a standard 401(k) hold physical silver coins or bars.

Why silver fits in an IRA

Silver costs less than gold, and it also has industrial demand from technology and solar. Holding silver also gives you a physical asset alongside the stocks and funds in the rest of your retirement savings. Right now, the price of one ounce of gold buys you more than 60 ounces of silver. That may be part of why silver has been more popular than gold with our customers this year. From January to July 2026, silver made up 74.4% of Swiss America’s precious metal IRA orders.

Silver prices can be more volatile than gold because it is a smaller market so even changes in demand from industrial uses or investors can have a big impact. We recently discussed silver price predictions for the coming years on our podcast:

How to move your 401(k) into a Silver IRA

Here are the steps to move your funds:

Step 1: Check that you’re eligible

You can roll over a 401(k) from a former employer at any time. If you still work for the company, ask your plan administrator whether the plan allows an in-service rollover. Plans that allow one usually do so once you turn 59½. The same steps work for a 403(b), 457(b) or TSP.

Step 2: Open a self-directed IRA account

You can’t open a Silver IRA through a regular brokerage. The IRS requires you to choose a custodian to be a bank or an IRS-approved nonbank trustee for your self-directed IRA account, so you’ll work with a self-directed IRA custodian. They take care of paperwork, keep the account compliant, and arrange storage for your metals in an approved depository.

You can compare fees and services in our self-directed IRA custodian list. Once you pick a precious metals custodian, you’ll fill out an application to open your account.

Step 3: Fund your account with a direct rollover

Contact your 401(k) plan administrator and ask for a direct rollover to your new custodian. The administrator sends the money straight to the custodian, so nothing is withheld and you won’t owe any tax or penalty.

With an indirect rollover, the plan pays you and you deposit the money yourself. We don’t recommend this approach because it increases the risk of penalties. Here’s how the two rollover options compare:

Direct rolloverIndirect rollover
Who receives the moneyYour IRA custodianYou
Tax withheldNone20% withheld by your plan
DeadlineNone60 days to deposit the full amount
Tax and penaltyNoneIncome tax on any amount you don’t deposit, plus a 10% penalty if you’re under 59½

On a $100,000 indirect rollover, your plan sends you $80,000, and you’d deposit $100,000 within 60 days to avoid tax on the $20,000. A direct rollover skips that step.

You can roll over your whole 401(k) or part of it, depending on what your plan allows, and leave the rest invested in the plan. A rollover usually takes 2 to 4 weeks from start to finish, and most of that time depends on how quickly your plan administrator releases the money.

Step 4: Choose silver coins or bars

When the money arrives, work with a dealer to choose IRS-approved silver and direct the custodian to buy it on your behalf.

Step 5: Store it

Your dealer ships the silver to your custodian’s IRS-approved depository, and you can read about the storage options below.

What silver qualifies for your IRA?

The IRS requires IRA silver to be 99.9% pure and come from a government mint or an approved refiner. Eligible coins and bars include:

  • American Silver Eagle, including Proof Silver Eagles
  • 5 oz America the Beautiful silver coins
  • Canadian Silver Maple Leaf
  • British Silver Britannia
  • Mexican Silver Libertad
  • Engelhard and Royal Canadian Mint silver bars

Several of these are among our top IRA products and in 2025, the Silver American Eagle Proof was 10.10% of our Gold IRA purchases.

Pre-1965 U.S. coins, which are 90% silver, don’t qualify. That includes Morgan and Peace dollars and Walking Liberty half dollars. Graded coins sold as collectibles aren’t eligible either, and the Swiss America team can help choose coins for your IRA vs coins in your personal account. For gold and platinum, see our full list of IRA-approved precious metals.

Where your IRA silver is stored

You can’t keep IRA silver at home. The IRS requires you to keep it at an IRS-approved depository. Your custodian charges fees to cover storage, insurance and account administration.

We often work with Gold Star Trust Company and their fees are:

  • One-time setup: $50
  • Annual maintenance: $90
  • Commingled storage: $125 per year

You can also choose segregated storage, where your exact coins and bars are stored on their own. The cost on this option starts at $225 per year minimum.

With commingled storage, your first year comes to $50 + $90 + $125 = $265, and $215 a year after that. Gold and silver IRA fees are generally about $200 to $350 per year depending on the custodian you choose, and most custodians charge flat fees, so your cost stays the same as your balance grows.

Silver also takes up more room to store than gold for the same investment amount. Since one ounce of gold costs more than 60 ounces of silver, the same dollar amount of silver weighs more than 60 times as much as gold.

Most of our Silver IRA orders are for 5 to 10 oz pieces, which means fewer pieces to store for the same weight. Ask your custodian for its storage fee schedule before you buy.

Taxes, withdrawals and RMDs on a Silver IRA

With a traditional Silver IRA, your money grows tax-deferred, and you’ll pay income tax on withdrawals whenever you take them. If you wait until age 59½ to withdraw, you won’t have the 10% early withdrawal penalty.

Taking distributions from your precious metals IRA

You can take distributions by selling the metals for cash, or take them in kind and have the custodian ship the silver to you. You’ll also need to start taking required minimum distributions at 73 if you were born from 1951 to 1959, or at 75 if you were born in 1960 or later.

If you have a Roth Silver IRA, withdrawals are tax-free once you’re 59½ and the account has been open for at least five years. If you roll pre-tax 401(k) money into a Roth IRA, it counts as a conversion, and you’ll pay income tax on the amount you convert that year. Roth 401(k) money rolls into a Roth IRA with no tax.

A rollover doesn’t count toward your yearly contribution limit, so you can still add new money.

Silver in 401k: FAQs

Can I put my 401(k) in silver?

Yes. You can roll over all or part of your 401(k) into a self-directed Silver IRA and buy IRA-eligible silver there.

What is a gold and silver IRA, and how does it work?

A gold and silver IRA is a self-directed IRA that holds physical precious metals in place of stocks and funds. It follows the same tax and contribution rules as a traditional or Roth IRA.

Is silver a good investment for retirement?

It can be if you want to diversify from the stock market and own an independent tangible asset. Decide on the right investment amount based on your goals and overall portfolio.

How do I choose a silver IRA company?

Look for a dealer with decades of experience that shows its fees and premiums clearly. Swiss America has helped clients buy precious metals since 1982, and we’ve listed what to look for in a dealer if you’re comparing companies.

Can I hold silver in a Roth IRA?

Yes. A self-directed Roth IRA can hold the same IRA-eligible silver coins and bars. You fund your account with after-tax dollars, so qualified withdrawals are tax-free.
